How to read a wage determination

  • WD number and modification: for example OH20260078, Mod 1. The header of a WD lists every modification and its publication date.
  • Rate identifier: the code above each block of rates. A union code like ELEC0683-007 means a union rate prevailed; SU means a survey rate; UAVG a weighted union average; SA a rate adopted from the state. The date next to it is when that rate took effect.
  • Rates and fringes: the base hourly rate and the hourly fringe for each classification. Some rows add paid holidays or vacation in a footnote.
  • Area notes: some rows apply only to an area or zone named in the classification.

Frequently asked questions

What is a wage determination number?
The ID of a Davis-Bacon general wage determination on SAM.gov: two letters for the state, the year and a sequence number, for example CA20260001. Each one is updated by numbered modifications (Mod 1, Mod 2...), and the WD and modification in your contract are the ones that apply to your project.
Why does my county have more than one WD for the same type?
Some WDs cover only certain work (for example dredging, landscaping, or flood control) or only part of a county. The scope text on each result says what it covers. Use the WD written in your contract.
Is this the same as searching SAM.gov?
It uses the same source: the active general wage determinations SAM.gov publishes, fetched October 7, 2026. Every result links to the WD on SAM.gov so you can check it there. SAM.gov is the official site.
What about state prevailing wage rates?
State rates come from each state's agency, not SAM.gov. See the state pages for where to find them.
